Present

My name is Milton Gorré and I am the founder of Gingerly. So many share the story of a grandmother’s recipe; this is one too! Gingerly was founded on December 2, 2013. The name given to grandma’s ‘ginger beer’.

As the founder of Gingerly, I had the plan to produce the ginger drinks from home and sell them to various tokos and eateries. The quantities sold were not enough to live on.

At the end of 2014 I decided to start selling the drinks from the market in Amsterdam Southeast from April 2015. The idea arose after the sales on King’s Day 2014. My mother had been selling Surinamese cakes and ginger beer from grandma on Queen’s Day for 7 years.

Since then, more and more people have been introduced to Gingerly’s ginger beer. Ginger beer is the most favorite drink in Surinamese cuisine.

1986

This is my mother Marcelien R. Gorré, born on April 18, 1962. She is the youngest child of my grandmother. The one in her arms, that’s me. I was born on March 13, 1986. In my first year of life I lived with these three ladies in the Grunder flat in Amsterdam Zuidoost.

This is a picture of my grandmother Willy A. Zandwijken (March 28, 1926 – November 13, 2015). She knew how to cook and prepare all Surinamese sweets like no other. A housewife who continued her future and that of her seven children in the Netherlands in the 1970s.

The photo shows great-grandmother, Elisabeth R. Breeveld (6 June 1905 – 30 September 1998). She sold all kinds of Surinamese delicacies, including ginger beer. An uncle told how as a little boy he grated ginger for her.
